What Do You See?

Too many times I am around parents who cannot see what is in front of them. I am not talking about vision problems; I am referring to their inability to see their children for who they are and what they need.  Don’t consider me too critical. I recognize most moms and dads truly love their children and I applaud them for being devoted to them.  What I am most concerned about is that parents seem bound to expectations and needs that belong to them, not their children.

Don't Give Your Child a Pass

Enabling our kids by making excuses for their behavior will never help them. Too often we are so close to the situation that we can’t see the issues clearly. As a result, we create crippled, entitled, dependent children who become adults who make other people miserable.

A Mom's Job is Never Over

Joran Van Der Sloot’s mom has come out and said she will not visit her son in a cell and she will no longer embrace him. Most of you are probably thinking you don’t blame her. After all, he has been accused of killing a girl in Peru in addition to the allegations of killing Natalee Holloway, the high school graduate from Alabama.

In an interview with foreign media, she indicates there had been something wrong for a long time and she probably should have gotten him help. She acknowledges he could be capable of “doing something” to Stephany Flores because she noticed he had changed. According to his mom, he could no longer tell the difference between a lie and the truth.

How many single moms do you know? Of the ones you know, how many of them do you think will be remembered in some special way on Mother's Day? When I look at the ones I know, not many.

Many single moms have children who are young and there is little or no support system in place to help them do something nice for their mom. For the moms who have teens, they may have a better chance of being remembered but many of them have told me it is awkward to ask their moms for ways to make money when the mom knows it is going to be spent on her.

So What Comes After Outrage?

Everyone who has heard the story about the mom who let her infant die from neglect because she was addicted to video games has a right to be outraged. I think we call it righteous indignation. When a mom is so focused on a fictitious baby in a video game she forgets to take care of her own real-life child, there is a problem. A huge problem.

The baby died from malnourishment because she was not paying attention to it. When further questioned, she said they didn’t tell her how much to feed her at the hospital and she didn’t realize she was starving the baby  to death.
